When you first insert the
FrontPage 2000 Cd in the drive, it checks to see if you have a personal web server running. If you do not
have a personal web server running you will have the option of installing one. It is
highly recommended that you install the personal web server before installing
FrontPage 2000. Refer to your installation guide for more details on this procedure.
Performing a Typical
Installation
- Insert your FrontPage CD into your CD-ROM drive.
- You will see a Microsoft FrontPage 2000 dialog box. You need to click on "Install
FrontPage 2000".
- You will then be prompted to enter your name, company, and then the CD Key number. You
will then need to agree to the license agreement terms to proceed with the installation.
- A dialog box will appear asking you to select the type of installation. You should
select "Typical" unless you are proficient with software installation.
- Once the installation procedure is complete you will then be ready to begin designing
your own FrontPage web.

| Uploading With Microsoft® FrontPage® |
Before you can use Microsoft® FrontPage® 2000, you must purchase the FrontPage client program from a software distributor and install it on your computer. For an introduction to FrontPage 2000, how to purchase, installation questions and general information, please visit the official Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Web site at the following URL:
http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/
This chapter provides useful information about using the FrontPage 2000 program; however, this is by no means intended to replace documentation provided by Microsoftâ Corporation.
Microsoft FrontPage 2000 is a software package that allows you to easily create and maintain websites, without requiring an in-depth knowledge of HTML or FTP. This is made possible by the FrontPage system, which consists of two parts:
- The FrontPage Client program that runs on your personal computer, purchased through a software vendor.
- The FrontPage Server Extensions that reside on the server and come pre-installed with your
NT Pro and Mission Servers.
Together, the two communicate with each other to formulate a seamless 'behind the scenes' upload and publishing process. All you need is a general understanding of FrontPage, which is very similar to Word, Publisher and other Microsoft-based applications.
Before exploring all the features and options of FrontPage 2000, it is important to know that there are two ways in which you can create and modify your website:
Option 1: Open your website directly from the server and make ‘live’ or ‘hot’ changes to the site.
Option 2: Create your website on your local computer then ‘upload’ the finished website to the server.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both methods. If you choose to open your site directly from the server and make changes (Option 1), your site will be updated immediately, however, you have no backup in the event of server downtime, data corruption, or data loss. If you choose to create website content on your local computer then upload the finished website (Option 2), you will have a safe backup of the entire website, but the process is considerably longer than making changes directly to the site.

Whichever method you choose, it is of entirely personal preference. Many website administrators and Webmasters use a combination of both.

Publishing Directly to the Server
|
You may open your website directly from the server and start making changes right away! This is very similar to working with a document on your PC, but everything resides on the server. The advantage of this method is time as your results are immediately available.
If this option interests you, perform the following steps:
- Launch Microsoft® FrontPage 2000® from your desktop or Start menu.
- Click on the open feature as if you were opening a file from your local computer.
- Enter your domain name (www.domain.com) or IP address in the File name field then click Open. If you are not already connected to the Internet you will be prompted to connect.
- Enter your account 'User name' and 'Password' when prompted with the below dialog box.
- You will see a directory listing of your website similar to the one below. Double-click on the document you want to open or enter the file name below and click Open.
- The page will come up in the right window. You may start making changes directly to the page like you would in a word-processing environment.
- When you are ready to save your work, click on the Save icon!
- You will be prompted for a file name and file location. Enter a file name for this page or use the default name provided then click Save. Changes will take affect immediately and the world will see your website!

Creating a Local Site Before Upload
|
As an alternative to publishing directly to the server, you may create your website on your local computer then upload the finished project to the server. Again, this is a preferred route for those desiring a backup copy of their site or testing the site before release. Follow the below steps to achieve this:
- Launch Microsoft® FrontPage 2000® from your desktop or Start menu.
- Start entering text or graphics as you would in a word-processing environment.
- When you are satisfied with your changes, click Save.
- You will be prompted for a file name and file location. Enter a file name for this page or use the default name provided then click Save. Your website is now ready on your local computer.
- If you are ready to upload your work from your local computer to the Internet, click on File then Publish Web.
- Enter your full domain name in the below dialog box. If you want to publish to a subdirectory of your website, specify this with a slash (/) after your domain, (example:
http://www.domain.com/sales).
- If you would like choices on what exactly to publish, click on the Options button. This will open up the below choices. When you are ready, click on Publish.
- When prompted, enter your account username and password, then click OK.
- You will see the traditional 'file copying' status bar on your screen.
- When you receive the below confirmation dialog box, click on Done.
These are the two methods of website publishing in FrontPage. The FrontPage client will publish the entire Web as your main Web site, or Root Web. Depending on the speed of your Internet connection and the size of your Website, this process may take a significant amount of time.

If your hover buttons don't work on the Web, chances are good that you
didn't upload the Java applet files to your server. There are two files, fphover.class and
fphoverx.class, and they must be in a directory called _fpclass within your root web.
However, do NOT put the HTML page that includes the buttons in that directory. You also
need to have the FrontPage 2000 server extensions installed. If your not sure if these files
are in the correct directory contact a tech support representative. pocket projector iphone 4

FrontPage utilizes HTTP to communicate with the web server. The command
will not transfer the local FrontPage Server Extension files to the target server. When
using an FTP application, it is important to transfer only the content files from the
originating web server. Do not FTP any _vti _* directories. If these directories or files
are transferred, they will overwrite the existing files on the target server.
